Job Description

At Joby Aviation, based in California, we have been working since 2009 on developing an air taxi that will safely, emission-free, and quietly transport people to their destinations in the near future, while also being accessible and affordable for everyone. The Joby team, consisting of over 1800 engineers and experts from various fields in the United States, received additional reinforcement in mid-2020: Joby Germany GmbH, located in Sauerlach near Munich, brings its engineering expertise to the development of our electric aircraft (eVTOL = electric vertical take-off and landing) on its path to series production, highlighting Joby Aviation's continued growth.

As an integral member of our Factory Systems team, you will play a leading role in bringing the production of our eVTOL to Industry 4.0. You will be responsible for conception and development of services interacting with everything from large production machines to users and everything in between, driving automation and coherence to existing regulations in this new type of industry. With your development skills, you will drive the integration of our production machines and the connection to all related production data, significantly advancing automation to the greatest extent possible.

Staff Software Engineer & Teamlead (m/f/d)

Your tasks in detail:

  • Guide and mentor a small team of six developers, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and fostering best engineering practices
  • Design and implement scalable, distributed system architectures leveraging both cloud and edge computing
  • Develop backend services and APIs in Python to interface with production machinery, IoT devices, and external systems
  • Work closely with frontend developers, devops and product to deliver complete features, ensuring seamless integration of all technologies
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to refine requirements, ensure regulatory compliance, and develop functionalities that support production goals
  • Engage with external vendors to define strategies for system stability, performance, and interoperability
  • Participate in deployments and integration work at our facilities in the US and Germany

Your profile:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Must have advanced Python programming skills
  • Advance proficiency with RESTful APIs and/or streaming technologies (Kafka)
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms and edge computing paradigms
  • Experience with GitHub-based CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with databases like PostgreSQL or TimescaleDB
  • Knowledge of various file systems and cloud storage solutions is advantageous
  • Experience managing diverse engineering teams and working in international, cross-functional environments
  • Comfortable with agile development practices and managing complexity in industrial production settings
